How an application for divorce works

The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act came into effect in 2022, introducing no-fault divorce. The new law removes the need for one party to blame the other for the breakdown of the relationship, or for couples to have been separated for a specific period before applying for a divorce.

Nowadays there are two requirements:

You must have been married for at least 12 months
You have to state that the marriage has irretrievably broken down
